After heating and holding the steel in a quenching furnace under manufacturing conditions appropriate for each steel material, it is rapidly cooled and transformed into a martensite structure. As the steel is too hard and brittle in its quenched state, it is heated again in a tempering furnace to give it toughness and adjust the hardness to the specified specifications.
